Faros Láser
Los estilizados faros que parecen observarnos en esta foto son los ojos del BMW i8, el nuevo deportivo híbrido que el fabricante alemán va a comercializar en 2014. Los faros son, además, los primeros en utilizar haces láser como sistema de alumbrado.
Antes de que pensemos en conductores gritando y quedándose ciegos al cruzarse con este bólido hay que aclarar que el sistema es completamente seguro. El haz láser, de color azul, no está enfocado, sino que varias lentes lo abren para generar un haz de luz amplio con el que iluminar la carretera.
El usar diodos láser tiene no pocas ventajas. Para empezar, es 1.000 veces más brillante que un LED, más resistente, y solo consume dos tercios de la energía de este. Además, los diodos láser ofrecen una luz con una temperatura de color de entre 5.500 y 6.000 grados Kelvin. Los antiguos faros de Xenon introducidos por BMW en su Serie 7 en 1991 ofrecen, como mucho 4.000 grados Kelvin de temperatura de color. La nueva iluminación láser de la compañía es casi la del sol.
